I’m a dab-hand with Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and Audition, can handle a camera, know a thing or two about video formats and am also fluent in sound recording, sound effects and music (composition, recording and editing). Oh, and I can also do the odd voiceover too, if required - ask me about my Hugh Laurie impression. Actually, don't, The Wife says it doesn't sound anything like him.
In my spare time I like to ponder the nature of universe and to make biscuits. Well, when I say 'make biscuits', I really mean 'help The Wife to make biscuits' by doing the initial testing of the final baked versions (REALITY-CHECK: that's called 'eating biscuits') and doing the washing up of the befouled implements.
I am also a serial parenthesiser (no, really) and my penchant for parenthesis is second only to my desire to hyphenate - I just can't-help-it.
Some people can do everything. They know about everything and will tell you that they can do exactly what you want when, in reality, they're blagging and will make it up as they go along.
I lack the blagging gene, so, here's where I tell you exactly what I can do...
Mmmm... this is a bit of a broad category which I'd better explain:
Video - animated promos, segments, title sequences, bumpers, charts, logos - with or without lens-flares (I'm not kidding). Also, display pieces for museums and animated infographics.
Banner ads - you know, those annoying, historically Flash-based advertisements that drain your laptop's battery at an alarming rate - these days I make them in HTML5 but can still create Flash versions too, if you're old-school by way of inclination.
Websites - sites can benefit from animation, as long as it doesn't stop the user getting at your content. There's nothing worse than having to wait while a meaningless animation happens, but movement can enhance your message if used correctly.
I have a worked with audio a lot: in the studio as an engineer/mixer; on location as a sound recordist; front-of-house as an engineer and in the edit-suite specialising in soundscapes and 'foley'.
I have many years experience recording and editing voice-overs and I'm very good at seamlessly editing music to fit pre-built sequences. Sound effects-wise, I have a large library to call on but I really enjoy creating new sounds from scratch to suit particular on-screen actions.
And don't forget that websites can use audio these days too - many sites benefit from judicious use of sound effects.
Anecdote: I once created all of the SFX for the TV show UltraTech utilising just a single...
No. You don't want to sit through one of my interminable anecdotes.
Over the years I have written a lot of music, both for commercial purposes and for my own enjoyment. It's probably unlikely that you will have heard any of my tunes prior to landing on this site, unless you were actively engaged in the virtual-reality scene in the mid nineties, or happened to stumble upon any of a number of TV adverts for Hi-Tech shoes or were at the UK launch of the Ford Galaxy in London.
It's worth noting that my composition skills lean somewhat towards the 'unusual' end of the spectrum and that if you want someone to write a lively latin dance tune, or maybe a country & western ballad that speaks to the efficacy of your latest endeavour, I'm probably not your man.
But, if you want something slightly err... diagonal, and not at all what you might expect, then please get in touch.
This used to be the domain of the CDROM, but no-one wants one of those anymore, which is a shame because I was really good at designing and making them. For those in-the-know, I was a Director expert - top-notch Lingo skills and everything. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about - don't worry about it, you're not missing anything.
These days interactives are all about touch-enabled experiences for museums and exhibitions etc. We're talking about a Flash-based, animated info-graphic wonderland. Or, increasingly, an HTML5-based animated info-graphic wonderland that can be easily incorporated into a responsive website after the carnival is over.
And not a Powerpoint slide in sight, although I can do these too - but only if you insist.
Tell me what you want and I'll tell you what you need and, perhaps more importantly, what you don't.
Dynamic sites can be driven by my own CMS, which has been developed over the last eight years (and is used on the majority of the sites I build) or Wordpress if you really want to torture me. Other Content Management Systems are available.
I can host a site for you, or work with your current host.
If you already have a developer in mind, but want to double-check that what they're telling you is correct, I'm happy to look over their proposals to make sure that your requirements are being properly met.
Modern, individual, responsive designs that allow people to use your site with the minimum of fuss. Complex sites simplified. Did I say 'modern' - oh yes, I did.
I can also do old-fashioned too if that's what you'd prefer - many people do you know.
I am not a print expert, but in 2017 I had to step in to do some emergency outdoor advertising posters for a publisher who had been let down at the last minute. I said that I'd have a go at helping out and the results went down well. So well, in fact, that I've had repeat work from that client and several others. Bingo.
No, I don't do weddings.
In fact, you could say that I specialise in photography that doesn't contain any people at all - well OK, perhaps I'll allow the odd one in frame now-and-again, just because.
I have a particular love for Black & White, but also recognise that sometimes Colour is King.
If you have objects, products or locations that you want to show with a certain originality, then please get in touch.
